CURRENT E V E N T S C U R R E N T E V E N T S (see below for details) Opening Date (2008), User Fees, Camping, Fires, Shooting Ban, Road Closings, Special Events Vedauwoo Vertical Dance (see "The Play")
~ O f f i c i a l O p e n i n g D a t e ~ The "official" (USFS) opening date for Vedauwoo (including Blair) is May 15th, depending (of course) upon weather conditions. Prior to that, gates to the Central Area and Lower Blair Parking Area will be locked. Of course you can ALWAYS park outside the gates and walk in at any time of the year. NOTE: As of 2005, new hours for Central Vedauwoo are 8 AM to 8 PM.
~ U S E R F E E S ~ Access to much of Vedauwoo is free, however there are USER FEES charged for Central Vedauwoo and the Lower Blair Parking Area. User fees are the same as last year. It is now $5.00 per day per car for a drive in pass, or get a Season Pass from the US Forest Service (still unequivocally the best deal around!!) by sending a check for $35.00 to: U.S. Forest Service, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, 2468 Jackson Street, Laramie, WY 82070 (tel: 307-745-8971). Season Passes may be available at the USFS KIOSK situated on Road #720 (the road leading into the Central Area) at Vedauwoo. The KIOSK has been moved ('05) closer to the interrsection of Road #700 and # 720. In other words, You Can't Miss it !!
~ C A M P I N G ~ There are 28 semiprimitive ('designated) campsites available within the confines of Central Vedauwoo, all at a 'first come-first served' basis - each at a cost of $10 per night. There is usually water available, a head, picnic tables, grilles but no shower facilities. There is a 14 consecutive day limit to these sites. Dispersed camping ('non-designated camping) is allowed nearly everywhere else that it is not expressly prohibited, and there is no charge. It is highly recommended to make use of pre-utilized campsites at least 140' from any road to help preserve the forests. Please clean up after yourself and LEAVE NO TRACE of your occupancy. Make it the same or better than when you came for the next visitors. There are several other campgrounds within a radius of 6 miles of Vedauwoo. Curt Gowdy, Tie City and Yellow Pine are some of them. Of course Laramie, Wyoming is less than 20 miles west (and mostly downhill). More details on the USFS Web Site.
~ F I R E S ~ As of 4-01-05, there are no fire bans or restrictions anticipated. However, pending weather requirements during the season, the USFS reserves the right to change their mind. We are assured they will post new regulations (as they are deemed necessary) near the entrance kiosk and other main 'bulletin boards' in the area. You are encouraged to use pre-existing fire rings!
~ S H O O T I N G B A N ~ There is still a ban on the discharge of all firearms, including air and gas powered guns, from MARCH 31st through September 10th according to 36CFR261.58. Take notice of this as it is enforced and the fine is $5,000. This ban includes all weapons, even air rifles and paint ball guns.
~ Road Closures, Restricted Areas ~ Several roads accessing great climbing formations like the Valley Massif and the Reynold's Complex have been closed off in recent years due to a variety of reasons such as (but not limited to) misuse (destruction of fragile marshes and fencing by 4 wheelers) and lack of maintenance funds. The most noticeable closure in 2000 was Road 700D to the Reynold's Complex and Devil's Playground. Several other roads are being watched closely. You can still hike in to these more remote areas, it just takes more time. If you see negligent activity, please report it to the Enforcement Officer, Laramie District, USFS, 307-745-8971 !! The road providing access to the south side of the Nautilus was closed off (May, 2001), as well as all spurs along Road 700 for about a mile further east. This has eliminated a considerable number of popular dispersed campsites, so plan on going elsewhere.
~ S p e c i a l E v e n t s ~ The US Forest Service sometimes sponsors 'special' events. Other things happen from time to time. Copyright © 2002-2005 VedauwooResource, All Rights Reserved |
